Anne Hyland makes large, colorful murals which are composed of clay tiles with underglaze color, colored clay and lusters. In the mosaics, the tiles are
used to transfer photographs to the pieces. The original photos are digitized and manipulated in photoshop, and each pixel becomes a one half inch clay tile.
The resulting murals combine photography and drawing, and the images of people, places and objects are juxtaposed in unusual narratives that have an edge
Some of her murals have been made for one percent for arts programs, and they are installed and have been exhibited at the Western Connecticut State
University, the Bristol Satellite School in Bristol Connecticut, and the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She has received
grants from the Connecticut Commision on the Arts and the Cambridge Arts Council and has exhibited nationally including the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian
Institution, the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in NYC, and the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Her work is included in the collections of the
Southern Connecticut State University, the Wadsworth Atheneum and numerous private collections.
The clay mosaics are extremely durable and are reminiscent of classic Roman mosaics from Pompeii, Piazza Armerina in Sicily and other ancient sites. The clay
will last indefinitely and will not be affected by bad weather or harsh conditions. These mosaics can be cleaned with soap and water and can be treated with
an anti-graffiti coating if they are installed in a high traffic or unsupervised area.
Ms Hyland maintains a studio in Somerville, MA where she works and lives. Her work can be seen at the Vernon St Studios in the annual Somerville Open Studios.
